brown, shades of paleness

multicultural

longing for constant comfort

warmth

acceptance

constrained by cotton

sometimes silk

willful

relentless

leads

never follows

always probing deeper 

insistent 

assertive

stubborn

addictive

 

soft

slick when stimulated

circular

elongated

discerning

accommodating

fond of pearls

holder of jewels

keeper of the king

dismissive

inviting

circle of life

enigmatic

tempermental

high maintainence

thick

white

substantive

lava-like

headstrong

life-juice

damp 

rainbow'esque

always sticks the landing

waits for no man

blind seeing eye

piercing vanilla and blue

distracted by earth sounds

trapped between secular and heavenly

walking a tightrope loosely

hands dangling at sides

filled with hubris and anxiety

bouncing 

flying

hurling weight

impacting energies

intersecting with dispassionate personas

disecting mazes

ingesting human pollution

reaching for divinity

The prompt for today's poetry challenge is to create a poem based on the 12-bar blues musical form. My parents played the blues all the time when I was growing up so I'm no stranger to this! I hope you enjoy:

Jukebox Bennie

I'm sweet on Jukebox Bennie, cuz he's got thick black wavy hair

I said I'm sweet on Jukebox Bennie, cuz he's got that thick black wavy hair

In June I'm supposed to marry Billy, but I don't really give a care

 

My momma said Bennie's just a playboy and he'll never amount to anything

My momma swears Bennie's a playboy and he'll never amount to anything

But I'm lost in love and floating and I want to wear his ring

 

When he looks at me and grins my soul cold fades to black

I'm telling yall when he looks at me my soul cold fades to black

Jukebox Bennie done just stole my heart and he aint gone give it back

 

Billy Johnson keeps a ringing and I ignore his every call

Cuz me and Bennie is a courting and kissing at the mall

 

I done told my girlfriend's Sally Mae and Desiree that today is the day

Bennie's got something to tell me and I need to go see him right away

 

I put on my black mini-skirt and red lipstick yall and painted up my nails

But when I got to Bennie's house that man had run off outta town with Gail

 

I can't stop crying yall, I just don't know what to do

I'm feeling kinda foolish yall and I don't know what to do

If you ever meet Jukebox Bennie dont'cha be no fool

That man's heart is empty and shallow like a grave

I'm feeling kinda foolish but I gotta live with the mess I made

 

Old Billy Johnson wouldn't take me back and laughed in my face

Old Billy Johnson just laughed and laughed all up in my face

That's okay cuz I gotta a new crush and he plays the bass!

WORDS ARE A CRIME

words are a crime

uttered from a place deep

buttered with a sick sticky substance called hate

words are a crime

 

poisonous delivery

from fingers on a keyboard

a tongue dripping with bad blood

and steamy halitosis

words are a crime

 

whispered slowly and hotly

into the ear of a lover

she doesn't look like you

her skin is dark

you pierce her with a white rod

the anger is centuries old

she cries out in passion

you inflict her with pain

saying mean and nasty things

she loves it

she's sick

you're sane

words are a crime

 

little seeds dropped 

sprouted and spoiled

instilled with doctrine they don't understand

they follow suit because you are the teacher

words are a crime

 

your culture is hidden behind skin that betrays it

you pass with glee loving the anonymity

walking with the wealthy 

protected by the judicious

all the while feeling fradulent

you act out

report those who you fear

you are more like than who you claim to be

911 what's your emergency?

I'd like to report a suspicious person

he looks black

he's just staring

looking at the houses

he's staring at me

now he's running

those assholes

they always get away

 

help! help! help!

pop!

On day two of this poetry writing challenge, I'm following the prompt from the official NaPoWriMo website which calls for creating a work based on the song that was number #1 on the day you were born. Being that I had never heard of the song that held the #1 spot on the day of my arrival, I am taking suggestion #2 from the site which suggests writing a poem that captures the essence or spirit of the first popular song you remember from childhood.

Marvin Gaye's Got To Give It Up, was played often in my house when I was little and because of that he became one of my favorite singers. Ironically Marvin Gaye died on April 1st, 1984 and was born on April 2nd, 1939 so I feel like his spirit is really with me today as I give you...

 

Giving it Up!

sliding out of constricting fabrics

dipping and diving into cool streams

remembering lightness

celestial beings

 

rolling in the deepness

jumping on the bluffs

grooving to the roughness

once is never enough

 

the sky is wrapped around gently

holding us tight

embracing the beings

constructed from light

 

in and out 

out and in

the pleasure increases

and then begins again

 

the screams are in A minor

the moans are deeper than that

bodies move sensuously

defying their girth and fat

 

sweat glistens 

the lonely listen

vibing on the melody

inspiration can seep through walls

filling the empty

 

take the joy where it lands

hold rainbows in your hands

gyrate with force 

meld together with grace

sink into flesh and spirit 

savor the taste

 

sooner than expected

it will be time to go

time to recede and forever recline

exhaust all pleasurable possibilities

live in the now & not in your mind

 

shout, dance, laugh, kiss, hug

and skate

live your life lovely

do it now

don't wait

 

breathe deep and long

adding all your troubles to it

blow it out strong

go ahead and do it

 

feel the weight lifted

that cross is all gone

swing your hips

throw your chest out

and sing your song

Lyric Fire: NaPoWriMo 2012 - Day 1 - Fool For Love

The time to express yourself in poetry is upon us! Today is April 1st and that means it's the start of National Poetry Month! Yes! There are many ways people can celebrate, but some choose to participate in NaPoWriMo, (National Poetry Writing Month) which is a 30-day poetry writing challenge. 

The poems can be any style or length, but if you would like to follow daily prompts, visit the official NaPoWriMo website for instructions and inspiration. 

I usually freelance and come up with my own ideas, but today I chose to do a mash-up of the site's prompt, which is “carpe diem” and April Fools' Day. What better way to usher in April than with some poetry! Seize the day! Enjoy!
